Senate approves cyber crime bill

Senate on Friday approved the Cyber Crime Bill, ‘The Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act’ alongside advising 50 amendments to the original bill passed, which shall treat to restrain crimes that are committed online.

While addressing the house, Senate, Minister of State of Information Technology and Telecommunication Anusha Rehman said that all those rules shall be acknowledged which shall guarantee that the institutions do not abuse or misuse the Cyber Crime Bill.

The bill will now breach back to the National Assembly where the proposed amendments will be discussed among all the assembly members.

Some of the major amendments include:

  1. Convicts under the bill will have 30 days to appeal the sentence in a high court.

2. The implementation of the law will be reviewed by relevant authorities twice in a year to weed out problems.

3. PEMRA licenses, including TV and radio stations, do not fall under the ambit of this law.
