The India Army base in Srinagar, Kashmir, has been attacked on Sunday morning by suspected rebels. The militants attacked the major army camp close to the highly militarized line of control dividing the disputed Himalayan region between India and Pakistan, authorities said.
According to police reports, an unspecified number of militants entered the base quietly in the Uri town before dawn and used guns and grenades to target the soldiers.
A military officer at the scene told media reporters that the soldiers returned fire and a gunbattle was ongoing.
Both the officials, who spoke on condition of confidentiality as they were not certified to speak to media, and hence did not immediately specify any casualties.
However, it has been reported now that 17 Indian soldiers have died in the attack with multiple injured.
