A special court in Mumbai has issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against controversial preacher and Peace TV & Islamic Research Foundation founder Zakir Naik in a money laundering case.
The warrant was issued in light of a plea filed by Enforcement Directorate. The warrant has been sent to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), which will then be sent to UAE for the execution.
Even before the court passed this judgement, Naik’s lawyer submitted his demand against the Enforcement Directorate’s Application.
Zakir Naik had earlier asked for his statement to be recorded through video conferencing instead of being physically present in ED. However, the directorate moved a plea in special court stating that Naik had failed to comply by the rules.
The agency also produced statements of Aamir Gazdar, arrested employee of Naik’s institute, Islamic Research Foundation, and Naik’s sister to support the claim that he was involved in laundering money in the name of running a charitable organisation.
