WhatsApp tells people to buy new phones, announces to cut off support for old phones

Bad News! WhatsApp has announced that it would soon be barring its service for millions of phones, worldwide. The Smartphones that are old will soon be cut off from the free chat app.

WhatsApp first announced this news, earlier this year, and proclaimed that iPhone 3GS and Androids of the sort would no longer be able to receive WhatsApp messages. The company has advised that who have old phones should buy the new ones before the end of 2016, so the users have only few days left.

“If you use one of these affected mobile devices, we recommend upgrading to a newer Android, iPhone, or Windows Phone before the end of 2016 to continue using WhatsApp,” it wrote in a blog post published in February.

However, the company updated its post indicating that the support for BlackBerry phones will be prolonged till June 2017. After that no BlackBerry phones, even the new ones, would have the WhatsApp support.

WhatsApp has stated that it is taking this measure to make its free chat and video calling service secure with a “greater emphasis” on new features.

By the end of this year, the service would be discontinued for the iPhone 3GS, phones running Windows Phone 7, and any Smartphone that use Android 2.1 or Android 2.2.
